Volvo VCM LTE repair – connector broken during battery replacement

2 min read

Does your Volvo show “Volvo On Call service required”, is the SOS button not working, or does diagnostics show fault code U210909 (back-up battery)? Then the problem is in the Volvo VCM LTE module. This connectivity module handles Volvo On Call, eCall/SOS and the car’s mobile connection.

What goes wrong? The standard fix is replacing the back-up battery (Volvo 31450445). That battery replacement is exactly where things often go wrong. The battery connector sits tight and is only surface-soldered to the circuit board. When the plug is pulled, the connector tears off the board, often taking the copper pads and traces with it. The new battery then gets no connection, the fault remains, and the module is written off as defective. A complete new module is often recommended. In most cases, that is not necessary.

Our repairAt Nodefix we repair the original module at board level:

  • Restoring lifted or torn solder pads

  • Repairing damaged or burnt circuit traces

  • Fitting a new battery connector

  • Insulating and protecting the repair

  • Testing the module with battery

Because your original module goes back into the car, reprogramming or activating a new module is usually not needed.

Which module is this?Volvo VCM LTE, made by Actia Nordic AB, for example part number P31676874 (HW 32130115). Back-up battery 31450445 / GBQ6E / BP15. This module is fitted in the Volvo XC90, XC60, XC40, S60, V60, S90 and V90, among others, from approx. 2018. Always check the number on your module’s label.

Common symptoms

  • Message “Volvo On Call service required”

  • SOS / eCall unavailable

  • Volvo On Call app cannot connect to the car

  • Fault code U210909 Back-up Battery

  • New battery fitted, but the fault remains

  • Connector loose or broken off after battery replacement

How it worksYou can send in the module or drop it off in The Hague, Netherlands. Garages, car dealers and Volvo specialists are welcome as B2B partners.Price: [price]Turnaround: [turnaround]

Frequently asked questions

The connector broke off while replacing the battery. Is the module ruined?Usually not. This is the damage we see most often. We can restore the connector, pads and traces so the original module works again.

I already replaced the battery, but the message remains. Why?Most likely the connector or the trace to the battery is damaged, so the new battery has no proper connection to the module.

Do I need to buy a new VCM module?Usually not. A board-level repair is faster and cheaper than a new module.

Does the module need programming after repair?Usually not, because the original module goes back into the car with the same software and coding.

Tip for garages: how to avoid damage during battery replacement?Never pull on the wires. Fully release the plug latch and support the connector on the board while unplugging. If it goes wrong anyway, send the module in. Don’t try to solder it yourself, because the pads lift further very easily.

Do you work for garages?Yes, we work for garages, car dealers and chiptuners across the Netherlands and abroad.
